About

Cycle Oregon Summer Kids Bike Camp includes essential bike handling, group riding techniques, and practicing signaling, wayfinding, and using bike infrastructure. Campers go on real-world rides to picnics and playgrounds while reinforcing bike safety. A properly fitted bicycle, helmet, bike lock, T-shirt and namecard, lunch and snacks, water bottle, and bicycle accessories and supplies are provided for the duration of the camp at no additional cost, and bicycles, helmets, and locks are returned at the end of camp.

• Ages: 8–12 years old
• Schedule: One weeklong camp session, Monday through Friday with daily drop-off and pick-up times
• Price: Cost: $550. Scholarships are available covering half or the full registration fee for one weeklong camp session (Portland or Hillsboro).

Campers may bring their own bike and gear if the bike is properly fitted, in good working order, has front and rear hand brakes (no coaster brakes), and at least three gears. Campers are expected to ride a bike proficiently and without training wheels before enrollment, including smooth starting and stopping, pedaling for at least 20 minutes at a time, and riding in a relatively straight line. Campers are asked to wear comfortable clothing suitable for moving and playing, along with closed-toe, closed-heel shoes, and a bag or backpack with a light jacket, rain gear, sunblock, and sunglasses is recommended.

Cycle Oregon was born in 1988 with its very first ride, and its stated mission is to bring the joy of riding a bicycle to all of Oregon. The camp is part of Cycle Oregon’s Jump Start program, with Becky Newman serving as Program Manager and Shawne Martinez serving as Program Coordinator. Becky Newman has a background as an educator, has worked as a classroom teacher and after-school program leader, and is the founder of Makeshifter Canvas Works and co-founded Golden Pliers Bicycle Repair. Shawne Martinez is a dedicated car-free bike dad who has logged over 30,000 miles riding with his daughter across the Portland Metro area and leads Tigard’s only weekly bike bus.

Cycle Oregon partners with communities they ride through to bring economic development and tourism to different parts of the state and co-manages the Scenic Bikeways program with community partners. Scholarships for the camp are available courtesy of the Cycle Oregon Foundation. Bicycle accessories and supplies for the camp are provided by Golden Pliers Bicycle Repair & Supply, and the camp in Bend, Oregon is in partnership with R.A.D. Camps.
